Show & Tell
Amy has gotten her vintage fabric "Dear Jane" blocks put together in 3 sections and is now quilting them in the ditch.
Cheryl has knit a darling little sweater for her first grandchild, the yarn of course is handspun. It is from a knit book by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Her blue/purple/green hand spun yarn is done with a plied thread technique to add texture. She is knitting it into something that is not in my notes.
Cheryl as invested in a set of "Addy Clicks" round knitting needles. The tips click together for a secure fit on the round connectors and come in a nice case.
Jana has been playing with her new electric spinner. Her cute blue Ostrich was made from a public domain photograph. She wanted to do a value study, and has been doing a lot of thread painting.
Corriene reports seeing a pod of whales from the Newport beach, exciting! Another purchase she made at the Portland Hand Weavers Sale are scarves made by artist Chris Rossi, they are made the same as the cards she has showed us. She calls it eco-dyeing, plant materials are wrapped in silk, or wool suiting then boiled in water for an hour, with no mordant. Also done with an indigo dye bath.
Lorraine and Pat G. went to Asilomar to take classes at "Empty Spools Seminars" Lorraine took white, black and gray fabrics, Pat took black, white and red fabrics for their class on abstract art. They learned how to make "floaters," thin lines, wedges and different exercises in balance and motion. Each 12" sample block illustrated a different principle, and then they made a project to finish the class.
Pat's finished project, she had to buy extra fabric for this at the seminar, but it works very well, she certainly learned how to apply the new ideas to her project.
While Pat W. was in Eugene for eye surgery, she went to see the exhibit Clare mentioned at the Maude Kern Gallery, but she was a month too early. She was sent this beautiful jello dyed and printed tea towel from her daughter in New Zealand.
Vi picked up the Tamari Balls book from Peggy's give aways last month, and was reminded of the ones she has made. While she was in Shiboru Japan for the Roseburg sister cities trip, she was gifted the large ball. The other ones she made herself. She was offered to do an apprenticeship for them, but it was 8 years! Many of the vintage kimono fabrics were also gifts.
She wore a crazy quilt vest to Japan and they were so impressed with it, that she gave several classes on silk ribbon embroidery and crazy quilting. Her host family gave her vintage wedding kimono, with 24 carat gold embroidery, that she made into a vest. The crazy quilt vest is made from vintage silks as well, many of them 100 years old.
Tracy has been working with bottle gourds she has grown herself. Her daughter did the dragon drawing on this gourd, is it to be painted or wood burned? Tracy also discovered at Joan's fabric that they make special fabric for filler in hot pads, which she is making with chicken fabric. Ryan has collected lots of saws and other items for his metal projects, but could not work in the barn because of baby rabbits being born.
Clare announced that 2 weeks ago she became an American Citizen. Congratulations! She took a class on double weaving, this is the sample she made. She also made a bay quilt for a gift. The exhibit at the Mauve Kern Gallery in Eugene is May 29 to June 26, she has several woven rugs in the exhibit. Pat will have to make another trip up there.
Demo
Sue has brought her beautiful large art bowls to share with us today. They are from the book "Fast, Fun and Easy Fabric Bowls" She makes a cardboard template of a large or small circle or oblong with rounded corners. She uses canvas duck, stiff interfacing or other stiffeners for the middle layer. She often uses two layers of stiffener to get the effect she wants. She layers the top fabric, stiffener and back fabric, then makes darts to sew the shape. Or she quilts the top and stiffener first, then layers with the backing and makes darts. The edge is finished several different ways.
The black floral one has hand embroidery on it before it was layered. Thank you Sue for the demo, we will have a workshop to do these in early August at Pat W's. A supply list will be given before then.
